Kennedy Food Garden nice rotisserie chicken!

I recently went to The Kennedy Food Garden at 1901 John Fitzgerald Kennedy Boulevard in Center City Philadelphia, not far from West Philadelphia – where I live.  On a break from the Philadelphia Free Library, I went to lunch here and found myself in a place I had been wanting to go to for about six months.  ( The Mother of a friend of mine lives right across the street. She was the mother of late writer – editor Mr. Joseph Beam, ``In the Life,’’ a writer who would have been 100 times more professional and recognized that I am as a writer had He lived).
Getting back to the food at The Kennedy Food Garden, the rotisserie chicken was nice and tender, well-spiced and wonderful. I plan to go back soon.

An Ode to GALUSHA PENNYPACKER –
By Tracy Gibson
**Poverty is not a dead end without an opening for escape.  There are people living without shelter right under our noses at Vine Street near 19th Street right on the way to or from the Free Library, main branch.  They are stretched out laying near and or around a statue of Galusha Pennypacker.  When I see this my heart sinks and I think that we as a city could do so much better. As a nation we in Turtle Island’s North America { The U.S.} could do so much better.   Being ever vigilant is not enough.  We often have chosen the wrong tactics or have given up or don’t vote, or just feel frustrated and head for the bar or the nearest illegal drug dealer.  DON’T GIVE UP! Here are some tactics you might not have thought of:
** Ask and demand that BLACK people in power – the BLACK private sector, the BLACK elected officials, BLACK church and BLACK civic leaders – ask them for a ``HOMELESS UNIVERSITY’’ specifically designed to teach homeless people { People living without shelter} about how to budget money better; how to respect themselves by refusing to eat the poor-quality food offered by the Church Missions and food pantries; cook for themselves; not visit stores like WAWA, McDonalds, Burger King, Hardy’s, Wendy’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Bob’s Big Boy - which flourish off of poor-people’s dollars and offer nothing back to stem the falling tides of poverty - and go to Salad Works, BLACK VEGETARIAN PLACES LIKE HABISCUS AT 49th and Baltimore Avenue, and Sweet Greens at 40th and Walnut Street instead or, even better, cook at home, if YOU have a place to stay;; Cook low salt, low fat, tasty foods omitting foods like white rice, white potatoes, white breads, pork, beef and fatty oils { These cooking techniques can be taught at the New Homeless University};learn how also, to stay away from illegal drugs, illegally-gained prescription medicines, alcohol, cigarettes, and the human trafficking culture; learn how to contact people in the community who are responsible, reliable, hard-working and honest – there are plenty – and learn how to avoid much of the technologies that are separating our people and pitting our people against one another; learn inner strength through music and other media choices.
** Making it off of pennies is not an option. We need to introduce legislation that demands the quadrupling of disability benefits, welfare payments, food stamps, and other government plans. The rich will get richer because the poor will have more money to spend on good and services owned and distributed by corporations owned by the wealthy. The middle class will expand. More store ownership by formerly poor people will commence.  Poor people will be able to lift themselves out of poverty. THIS IS A WIN-WIN SITUATION. I tell you, this is not rocket science. My father was a rocket scientist. I know what I’m talking about. READ MORE ON MY BLOGS at http://ThePoliticsofREAL.BLOGSPOT.COM
**Meanwhile, watch more educational video on You Tube and read more books. (Write me for my book list). The endless mind-numbing and dumbing down of media will turn around as public expectations grow for more diverse and educational media. Watch movies like ``The Learning Tree’’ and ``Sounder’’ and ``Hunter Killer,’’ ``Five on the Black Hand Side,’’ ``12 Years a Slave,’’ ``Green Book,’’ and ``The Hunt for RED October.’’ Listen to songs like those by Caston and Majors ``Light in My Window,’’ and Stevie Wonder’s older songs like ``Living for the City’’ and some of Marvin Gaye’s tunes like ``What’s Goin On.’’
**Get plenty of rest and exercise. Join Planet Fitness when they have a One-Dollar special. Stay there when you need rest. If you have a locker you should be able to stay there for at least three hours when you are on the street and can’t get to the Free Library.
**Also: If you are brave and really angry don’t steal ANYTHING! What I want you to do is go to the supermarket and place everything you dream of buying in the shopping cart and take it to the front of the line and say ``Sorry Miss, or Sir, I don’t have any money to pay for this.’’ Let them put the food back. Don’t do this at a Black supermarket like the Fresh Grocer at Broad and Jefferson. Go out in the Burbs to GIANT or an elite market. They can’t arrest you for forgetting you don’t have any money. {IF WE LIVED IN A DECENT COUNTRY YOU WOULD HAVE MONEY. THERE IS NOT EXCUSE FOR THE GREEd AND FINANCIAL DISRESPECT!} . }  I felt embarrassed doing this but I have done it in the past and experienced a good feeling of taking action that helps make waves of change. Tell them GOD Almighty told you to do this, if they ask questions.

** If you are an activist, don't let them criminalize you just because you have political work to do.  STAY WITHIN THE letter of the LAW don't even JAY WALK or jump over the turnstile at SEPTA stations. Work to keep hygiene up as much as possible. I am not being hurtful when I ask you to take a bath. I have to also. If I had a magic wand I would make sure you have the things you need. Go to your doctor's appointments and therapy appointments and share as much as possible in therapy.  I have to also. Believe me, I know these things are not easy, but they pay off. Sometimes it doesn't take long!
**Write me with your ideas. I promise to give you credit for the ideas as I am able to. 1 - 215 - 823 - 9985

Some People Don't Like Dynasty - WHAT?!

Political Dynasties, King Makers, War(s), And The Movement for Black Progress…Face the Powers that Be, And Never Give Up the Struggle For HOPE!!!

By Brother Tracy Gibson

Throughout North American history there have been king makers—wealthy, powerful men (almost always White)—who have decided who gets to control the joy stick of government. Who gets to be on the inside of power and control the billions upon billions of federal dollars that get spent annually in America and on what federal projects, programs and considerations those dollars are allocated for as well as who we go to war with and for what reasons. Prescott Sheldon Bush (1895 -1972), a U.S. Senator from the state of Connecticut and a Yale graduate like his grandfather was the father of our 41st President (George Bush Sr.) and the grandfather of our 43rd President (George Bush Jr.) was such a man. Actually born in Columbus, Ohio, Prescott Bush would move on to become a well connected Wall Street executive and the author of books on finance. He might have failed at business early in life, but he knew how to interact with the right kind of people and push all the buttons to become wealthy, educated and well healed. He made sure, before he died in 1972, that his children & grandchildren would one day roam the inside hallways of Washington, D.C. and other corridors of power and control the purse strings connected to the billions of dollars we are forced to pay as tax-paying American citizens.

Prescott Bush made sure his son George Sr. (also a Yale graduate) went to all the right schools and hob knobbed with all the right people who would one day make his son the King of America—although he would not live to actually see that day… The end result was his son George Sr. getting a Congressional seat & his grandsons becoming Governor of Florida (Jeb) and Texas (George Bush Jr.). (By the way, did I also mention that George Bush Jr. also went to Yale?) Prescott had created a political dynasty. George Sr. went on to become the head of the notorious CIA during the last year of the Gerald R. Ford Administration) & then Vice President of the U.S. under Ronald Reagan through out most of the 1980’s. Finally George Sr. went on to be a one term President after Reagan. (George Bush Sr. was defeated in 1992 by Bill Clinton.) But low & behold, Father Bush (George Sr.) was not to be outdone. He made sure his son came back with a narrow, although contested, win in the year 2000 Presidential race against Democrat Al Gore. (Gore actually won numerically, but was defeated in the Electoral College.) The Dynasty was sustained & complete. Big Daddy Prescott Bush would sleep quietly in his grave knowing he had set the pace for his son & then grandson to lord over the so-called ``free world’’ as Presidents #41 and #43 of these United States—even though he had never actually witnessed those victories…

A while ago, there was another Dynasty in the making. Joseph Patrick Kennedy Sr. (1888-1969) wanted his son Joseph Patrick Kennedy Jr. (1915-1944) to become President. Joe Kennedy was educated at Harvard University (as was President Kennedy) and graduated in 1912. He went on to serve in many capacities during the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration including a stint as Ambassador to Great Brittan (1938-1940). He groomed his children, again, by sending them to the best schools. Boot leg whisky and working on Wall Street (some of his practices would later be described as ``insider trading’’) helped build the family fortune up to some $200-$400 Million Dollars by 1957. Tragedy struck the Kennedy clan early. Because of the death of Joseph Jr. in England during WW II , John F. Kennedy, the young Senator from Massachusetts from 1953 to 1960 (he also served in the House of Representatives from Massachusetts from 1947 to 1953) , would actually be the only Kennedy in the Twentieth Century to be elected President of the United States. The ``Kennedy Dynasty’’ was not quite as successful as the Bush Dynasty—at least not in reaching actual success as far as real time served in the highest office in the land—the Presidency. But the Kennedy White House was thought, for years afterwards and even up until this day by some Baby Boomers and others, to represent an almost dreamy Camelot era of fine clothing, good natured humor with reporters and high levels of professionalism and prestige on the world stage. The Kennedy Dynasty, however, was also fraught with family tragedy including the assassination of our beloved President during a motorcade in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963. Forty five years later our Nation still hasn’t fully healed from this family tragedy which impacted the entire Nation & much of the world--as so many baby boomers still remember little John John saluting his father’s casket and the sad but ever gracious Jacqueline Kennedy acting with such solemn dignity through all the ceremonies that are attached to losing a sitting head of state in North America...

Robert Kennedy (1925 -1968), the President’s younger brother, soon took up the mantel for his brother & had Presidential ambitions of his own. These ambitions were acted upon in 1967 when he decided to run for the Presidency that year. This Kennedy was a Senator from New York State and had served as Attorney General under his brother. But the Kennedy’s tragic story was to continue as an assassin’s bullets put an end to those ambitions in Los Angeles just after the June 6th California Primary which Robert Kennedy had won handily.

I remember as a child not believing the news of Robert Kennedy’s death. I sat on the front steps of the house next to ours on 49th Street playing jacks by myself when someone came up to me with the newspaper headlines blaring of the murder of R.F.K. I was shocked because his death came on the heels of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4th of the same year (1968). Had our Nation gone mad, I thought... What would this mean? There were already riots in many U.S. cities after the King assassination. It seemed the underpinnings of our Nation were crumbling. This perception of instability was shared by many Americans as they went to the polls that November and elected a Republican ``Law and Order’’ man from California named Richard Nixon.

The Kennedy Dynasty would have to be satisfied with a leading role in the Democratic Party for the family and a Senate seat held by Ted Kennedy (1932 – 2009) for quite some time. (Ted Kennedy was unable to unseat President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic Nomination in 1980.)

Dynasty, it seems, was more than just a tawdry, scandal-ridden TV show produced by Aaron Spelling in the 1980’s. It is a way of political life in America. There seems to be very few people who get to hold high office in North America & there seems to be a selection process through which all these men (and so far it has only been a men’s club) have to go through. It is almost as if they have to belong to some exclusive club fraught with high initiation fees, blood line requirements and educational background checks.

The 1939 Frank Capra film ``Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,’’ explores the concept of King Makers & corruption that has been married to Washington, D.C. politics for almost 20 decades. How do you get to be a King Maker? What is the process? Is being wealthy & well connected enough or do you also have to be a funky old White male to join in this process? Is there any chance that corruption and scandal can be divorced from D.C. politics within our lifetime? Jimmy Stewart played Smith in the film and said ``Things sure happen fast around here. Don’t they’’ when he was taken a back by some events taking place around him as he was about to take office as the junior Senator from a Midwestern state. He said a mouth full. He was (in this fictitious film) appointed Senator through a quirky mishap & some of the powers that be were not pleased with his taking power. He seemed too innocent, bright eyed and bushy tailed for a major position of power in D.C.

Generally speaking, things don’t happen by mistake in D.C. and they do sometimes happen fast--sometimes. President Obama was thought to be a Renegade by some writers when he came into power in January of 2009 on the massive National desire for change in D.C. during the November 2008 election. In most instances he has not & most probably will not deliver on his many promises he made for real, lasting and needed change for our Nation. . . [Maybe we should have made him sign a Progressive Pact that he would carry out specific duties and end the war(s) (for example) at a certain time.] The progressive and liberal wings of the Democratic Party are not pleased at this point in the end of 2009 with many of his appointments and actions. While he has changed the temperament of the White House into something less Right Wing and has been a good international ambassador for the country with a ``message’’ of hope and possible peace, he has done many things that don’t look very forward moving or progressive. Chief among them: he has named three of the most old funky or established White males to major positions of power in his administration (read Dangerous Triangle in Chapter 13); he has not created any new inner-city initiatives to work with corporate America and create summer jobs for youth and thusly stem some of the crime in those areas; he has not even given much lip service to a needed major overhaul of our financial system, military and infrastructure; he has not said one word about military cutbacks in a time when it has been proven that the Pentagon wastes about twenty five cents for every dollar it spends; he has supported the status quo, the existing military & the ``same old war-like White line of hegemony, politics as usual & White power domination in policy initiatives & military actions as his speech in Oslo [when he accepted the Nobel Prize for Peace] proved beyond a reasonable doubt. There are ``just’’ wars he said. There are ``real evil people’’ in the world, he said. The next day he had moved so far to the right in his address in Oslo that even Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin had to fall in line with some sweet words of support for the first African American President of the United States.

I am sure members of the Congressional Black Caucus such as Congresswoman Barbara Lee and progressive members of Congress such as Dennis Kucinich sat in dumb-founded amazement at such a speech. The Major Goliath White media, however, lapped it up. He had effectively picked up his peace prize while not batting an eye about his proposed military build up of an additional 30,000 troops for Afghanistan. Never mind where the money is coming from to effectively stage such a troop increase. (Some experts predict it will cost a million dollars for each trooper due in part to the rough terrain and the lack of basic necessities such as running water and housing.)

Bogged down in trying to get more encompassing health care legislation passed, the President has not created or even given much more than lip service to the business community about creating the thousands of new jobs that are needed for the teeming numbers of unemployed Americans. (The unemployment rate is about 10 % as of December 2009). The Brother obviously needs some help on the innovation and clear and new thinking side of things in his Administration.

Moreover, Mr. Jefferson Smith (in the Capra movie), upon taking a bus tour of D.C. after he was appointed Senator was deeply and profoundly impressed with the words enshrined at the Lincoln Memorial. A child and an older Black man looked on as he took in the site. So many Americans have, once again, been disillusioned with Obama—the President who had reignited our hopes and dreams & gotten people who would never vote—young & old, Black & White—to vote and believe in him--has largely let us down. There is a new face on things, but bracing up the underpinnings of our Nation is a man who represents mostly the same old line of thinking that got us into the economic morass, war(s) and partisanship of the Bush Jr. years. Mr. Smith soon became disillusioned as he found out the work & difficulties involved in doing a seemingly simple thing like starting a national boy’s camp for orphaned and wayward boys in his home state…

I remember a few years ago during a trip to Washington, D.C. that I also was moved by the Lincoln Memorial. How even before Obama came on the scene, I felt our country could move past the economic morass and political partisanship it was stuck in during the Bush (Jr.) years and become something fresh, new & hopeful. Something was needed that would really help the less fortunate and reflect peace and tolerance instead of war profiteering, White world domination and exploitation & destruction of so-called Third World or developing countries across the globe. Lincoln reflected aspects of that ``something’’. I had worked so hard for 30 years to move things along in a progressive direction, but it seems things only work quickly in D.C. if you have the deep pockets &, frankly, White skin & connections to make this so. If you want to be a mover & shaker, and you have Black skin, if you are in or out of office, it appears you have to play the game, support the status quo & belly up with the insiders & the fat White money boys. That is if you want to ``make it’’ on the world stage. Who knows what kind of deals President Obama has made with the Wealthy? It certainly seems that there was some kind of an agreement that things would be changed as far as style, but the substance has mostly remained in tact…

I remember going door to door in Philadelphia to generate support for the REPARATIONS movement & I remember running as a write-in candidate for U.S. Senator from P.A. in 2005. I’ve tried so many things to bring the human rights agenda some heat and some light—some truth and some inspiration… Then reality sets in when we see Mr. Obama exclaiming the virtues of war in Oslo and never saying a blessed word about the U.S.’s undermining of peace throughout the world through military intervention and the unscrupulous work of the U.S. intelligence network including the NSA and the CIA (along with the rest of the multi-billion dollar North American intelligence Network). The Right Wing; the War Mongers; the defense contractors like Halliburton, GE and Lockheed Martin; Wealthy Republicans; the Pentagon Brass—they all have a new friend in Mr. Obama who was elected to change things, but who pealed off what little was left of his progressive skin and threw his chips in with the Status Quo in Oslo, Norway... I guess the old adage IS true—you can’t beat City Hall… But I for one look onward & know just like at the actual birth of this country in the 1700’s tyranny can & will be defeated. In all its’ forms, ways and means, tyranny will be defeated... Don’t let yourself be easily disillusioned, fooled & like Denzel Washington said as Malcolm X in Spike Lee’s 1992 film ``hoodwinked, fooled & bamboozled.’’ We as Black people can’t afford it. Keep your eyes on the prize and keep supporting people like Barbara Lee and Dennis Kucinich in Congress. A Real, Authentic Black Man—An Indigenous Black Man…

By Brother Tracy Gibson

Your sandals are like the ones Jesus Christ wore…
Your hair is locked, or perfectly braided by your woman or your man…
Your hands are worn from the heat and toil of working in the fields…
Your brow is wet with the honest result of toil…
Your ancestors sprang from the Nile Valley as they overlooked the Root Dynasty, the Empire of Ancient Africa they had created…
You are now ALL OVER THE WORLD..
From Egypt to Chad to Gibbon to Atlanta to Kenya to Philadelphia…
You are there and have seen it all…
You are a Christ Child…a MASTER of men…
A man who owns time itself… But you don’t Lord over other men and women…
You are the Indigenous one—not the invader…
You are the essence of love And Respect for humanity…
Your rugged feet walked through Nazareth and Bethlehem
Your ancestor’s eyes were cast into the sky to create the SUN And the STARS…
You are an ancient African man and
As you walk through the City of New York, the perfect mix of
The Ancient and the Contemporary, few Europeans understand the dimensions of your existence among them…
Frankly, you are superior…
You have come from dirt and dust to once again rule the world…
You are a champion of fairness, justice and righteousness among men who plunder and hate….
You are an African Emperor in a pin striped suit
READY FOR THE WORLD…….AND Still,

You are NOT, allowed to be the hero and romantic lead because the mere vision of you shapes thought, time and response ….

But let’s be clear, if you are not a large part of the shaping of the New World, there will be NO NEW WORLD…

Writing In Wet Cement…

I am a writer with a host of experience seeking publication with your publishing company.  My new book had the original title of ``The Reawakening of the African Diasporar,'' but I changed it to ``Tracks to Truth, Power & Justice,'' and yet again to ``Writing in Wet Cement.'' I have an old volume that was also called ``The Re-Awakening of the African Diasporar,'' from several years ago.  I thought it over and I want to go back to the original title of ``The Re-Awakening of the African Diasporar,''   I must apologize for any confusion I am causing.  I have written many publishers and I have some of the work on my blog entitled ``The Politics of Real.''  Some of the writing from this book is several years old, over 15 years old if not more. While I have a copy of the book's official copyright registration from the Library of COngress under the name ``Tracks to Freedom, Justice and Freedom'' I thought I had originally sent the information in to the Library of Congress as ``The Re-Awakening of the African Diasporara.'' All I know is, the book was written some time ago and mostly completed whhile I lived in New Castle, Delaware from roughly November of 2006 to January of 2010.  These dates may not be exact, but are to the best of my recollection. The book is a guide for parents and youth to learn and develop better social values and be more responsible individuals.  The goal is to help them be more responsible, alert, law-abiding, education-minded, and an assett to our community instead of a detriment as they are sometimes viewed to be by the major media. It was especially written with troubled Black males in mind, but is well-suited for females as well.    [There was a Black Film Festival--called The Black Star Film Festival--here in Philadelphia this past summer of 2013. I have to say that I was pleased and suprised when such well-behaved, thinking, courageous and bright Black young people came out for the event. I was very pleased and delighted. .. I was practically overwhelmed....  I had encased our young Black people in the same frankly racist cell that the major White media does from time to time and this was a very wrong thing for me to do. I have enclosed one short excerpt for your consideration and a formal book proposal as best I could manage to get together. [If it is NOT suitable, please let me know who you might suggest to get it in much better order, for your proper and formal consideration.].  Please feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience.

Peace and Blessings,

Overview

About the Author

Brother Tracy Gibson is an uncle, writer, businessman, philanthropist and activist living and working in the West Philadelphia area.  He was educated at The Ohio State University [BA in Journalism with a minor in Black Studies]; and he has worked for two major publications--The Philadelphia Tribune and after a Summer Internship in 1977, he took a position at TV Guide Magazine in 1981.  He worked there for a year and a half and was transferred to Radnor, PA the mega magazine's National Headquarters. He worked at TV Guide for a total of 13 years.  He loves politics and especially loves mixing metaphors by writing about political events while also being an activist for progressive events and struggling people, especially Black People.  Anything to do with the advancement of Black people, Mr. Gibson usually finds His Way weighing in on the issue and working towards making positive, progressive change.  A life-long Democrat, Mr. Gibson recently changed to being an Independent voter.  He considers Himself a true North American Patriot. He is single and ``In The Life.''

The Market / The Community We are Targeting for Sales

We are looking at the parents, guardians and grand parents of young Black males and young Black females as our main customer base. Their children, ages 12 through 27 who are interested in growing their knowledge of self and of being a more viable, productive, politically aware and informed youth, with take interests in the book as Well.  The parents, guardians and Grand Parents will be between the ages of 35 to about 97.  The reason we are choosing this particular audience for our book is that this is the group needing the most help in establishing better values through education, religious experiences, spirituality, social contacts, political education and so forth.  This is also the group that can best gain from good, solid political analysis and stories with ethical and moral values held within the telling.

Promotion

I think parents and young people alike Will find the volume--``Writing in Wet Cement''--I wrote to be constructive, delightful, thought provoking, informative, intelligent, open-minded, helpful, respectful of our elders, and respectful of our people and our ancestors and even an inspiration to do better in life.  With a study plan, help from our churches and Mosques and work towards discovering and rediscovering who we really are, this book will help us towards a path to righteousness, responsibility, dignity and self-respect.  These aspects on life are often missing in much of our own upbringing and in the upbringing of our children.

Competition

There will likely be several publications about Black men coming out soon, but I haven't seen many that deal with Black youth and Black male teens in particular.  Coming from the perspective a a Gay Black man who DOESN'T want to see more Black teens take on this particular lifestyle, I think I have a very unique but highly desirable perspective.  First of all: one of the threats to Black men and boys is this whole idea that our masculinity is under attack.  [ It IS under attack and this is an issue I deal with in a unique Way in the book.]  Second of ALL, Most of the Black community wants to see our Black youth become responsible, reliable, Law Abiding, Up-Standing and employed or successfully in business for themselves......  This book has all kinds of paths and roads towards those ends.  I also have solutions and suggestions at the end of each chapter that help lead people on paths that are more viable in helping attain success in North America. Included:  good work habits; successful entrepreneurship; earning a degree; and buying a home.  Starting a family too soon is one of the major drawbacks of being Black and living in the inner city.  I strongly suggest our youth get educated and wait for marriage and children until they have started on a path to financial solvency. This one decision can have an incredibly positive impact on life chances for stability and happiness...  I also have a great and unique perspective about our parents who have Gay and Lesbian children.  We don't need to encourage that behavior, but if our young teens or older teens  or young adults do choose or take on that lifestyle, the last thing we should do as parents, guardians or loved ones and or grand parents is throw them out of the house and disown them.   There is also a real need for an organization for parents, guardians and grand parents who are dealing with the homosexuality of their children that may well be an off-shoot of the book--such as Black Parents of Gays, for example.

Sample Chapter # 1:

Introspective Thoughts on Being Black and Gay in North America….

By Brother Tracy Gibson.

It is not easy being Black and Gay in North America--especially if you are a Grass-Roots Patriot... Yes we are attractive and in ``Vogue.’’ Yes we have sex and have fun and can, to some degree, enjoy our lives, especially now with the higher level of acceptance of Gay and Lesbian people in general. But underneath the parties, the bar scenes, the entertainment industry jobs and flashy new acceptance and the ``Gay Marriage’’ issue; there is a lot of pain that runs very, very deep and a Black community that is still unforgiving, harsh and often hateful towards us. But all that aside, I have to ask each and every Gay and Lesbian Black person in North America, what have you done lately to raise the ethical standard for yourself and our community? What have you done to be more honest in your personal and business relationships? What have you done to make your living as a faithful Christian, Jew or Muslim ring true, real and authentic with yourself [ourselves] and in the face of GOD? What have you done to be honest with yourself about the issues you have that need clarification, study, thought and mental and emotional healing? When we do these things, this introspective homework, we will see our level of acceptance rise and even if we don’t our level of self-esteem, self-LOVe and self-acceptance will go up significantly and that will cause the healing and the forward motion we have all been working towards, waiting for and or are seeking to actually begin.....

I have been politically and financially and even socially ostracized for some of the views I have. When you LOVe God and LOVe yourself, you have a tendency to step on the toes of racism, injustice, bullying, phoniness and hate without even trying or taking calculated steps to do so. The Bull-Shit artists have to move out of your Way so you can do your work. It is NOT easy to be real with yourself. Especially if the Bull Shit artists sit in the White House, in Union Halls, in Editorial Board meetings at the Philadelphia Tribune or at Philadelphia Magazine’s plush down town editorial office. Or, yes, on Wall Street or at the TV Networks or other places of power like the Pentagon or Madison Avenue. There are now, more than even, a lot of Bull Shit artists in this world. [I could name several, but you might be surprised at the names I come up with. You might also be surprised to find that I am NOT only talking about White racist male Republicans.] I am also talking about young attractive Black men who are homosexual, but because of a job and a paycheck, or a ``successfil'' business, they stay inside a cocoon they perceive as safe and cushioned. Just ask the Brother who is now getting all the accolades for ``coming out’’ as a Gay BLack man who plays for the NBA. Everybody loves him now, but no one is talking about the people he may have hurt when he was flexing his perceived Heterosexual muscles by calling other Gay men, maybe even sex partners, the big ``F’’ word... Calling people that name may have made his male ego larger and helped him shrug off the looks he might have been getting when it was discovered in the press that he had no steady girlfriend.

But those are only allegations. {And frankly, none of our business as true believers in GOD--we should be preoccupied with doing His work--Am I correct?} I can really only talk about myself. Therapy has done me a world of good. I have seen a therapist for about 34 years. Now I mostly go to get medicine every third month and to chat a bit about any real troubles I’ve been having. Usually now the troubles are more professional than personal in nature, especially since I don’t have a steady man friend right now. But we as Black Gay men do a lot of hiding, shady treatment of others and back-biting that feeds into a lot of negativity. This negativity ultimately goes into the general perception that we are not a healthy segment of the Black community. But our Whole Black community needs to be sitting on the Psychiatrist's sofa. We have, as a people, some very hurt feelings and hurt ideas that need to be set correct, healed and rectified so we can, as a people move on and move forward...

I want to share with you two things that my Pastor at church, the Unity Fellowship Christ Church in Philadelphia, Pastor Jeff Haskins said to me or omitted to comment on that show just how far we have to go as BLack Gay and BLack Lesbian people and as BLack people in general. I once mentioned in an e-mail that we should have a picture of a Black Christ at church, not the White one that has been there for seven years. [We share the church space, so I’m not sure this is possible, but it would have been nice to have gotten enough respect to have gotten an answer.] Don’t get me wrong. Pastor Haskins is a sweet, kind, generous [in spirit], LOVing, and healthy person [in mind and body]—much more so than many of us as Black people are. Really we can even have a White Jesus and A Black one, but we should certainly have a BLack one.  There is only a White one there now.... He, Pastor Haskins,  visited my home once when I was feeling a bit down and not making good decisions for myself for a brief time. I was not dealing with reality correctly and honestly for a while there and Pastor Haskins and my LOVing Sister, Mrs. Claudia Aziza Gibson Hunter, really helped me find a better path. GOD helped also. But the fact that there is a White Jesus at church--and only a WHITE Jesus-- speaks volumes about how we don’t or can’t correctly take on the mantel that GOD has given us and move forward with it. When we truly LOVe ourselves we want to see our image in positive places and represented by positive people. Sometimes I think it doesn’t matter if Jesus was Black or White, but to pray in the presence of a White picture of Jesus in a mostly Black, politically aware, self-affirming Gay church says we are not really serious about who and what we are and how we can advance from where we are to what we want to be. That little picture says it ALL. Black images have been emasculated, destroyed, torn asunder, disheveled and misrepresented since the days of Amos and Andy right through to the images that are displayed in most of Tyler Perry’s movies. That one little picture may be part of the reason we don’t have the new church building and new location we want for our church. Another thing that Pastor Haskins did that showed me where He is as opposed to where He needs to be was I once told him over a nice Asian dinner at 40th and Chestnut Str--right here in Philadelphia's University City-- that I had suffered with some anger issues around race in North America. He said point blank, ``I Guess you are just racist.’’ After I picked my broken ego off the floor, I said, no I’m not a racist. I have totally legitimate concerns about being Black in North America. I think those concerns have been revealed by the dismay many people have after the ``innocent'' verdict for Zimmerman as a dead Trayvon Martin lay in the ground.... I think those concerns are revealed when we look at the incredible numbers of Black men and Black women who are incarcerated in U.S. prisons. I think those concerns are totally understandable when we look at the continuing unemployment rates in cities like Philadelphia, Detroit [where the City Council voted down a proposal for Africa Town and now the City is going Bankrupt], Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark and Camden to mention only a few. And I think those concerns are still very real when I look at the total mismanagement of our Schools at the hands of a mostly-White state board in Pennsylvania that is more concerned about the profits of the private sector than the Well-being of our youth and their proper education.

Some of the leaders of the Black Gay community are in desperate need of more training on racial matters; leadership matters; matters of relating to other leaders without letting ego get in the way; and in matters of raising funds properly and ethically. There is a segment of the so-called ruling class that really wants to help us even though much of our political astigmatism has been their fault. We have to find Ways of letting that help and healing happen in a positive and meaningful Way without falling all over each other grabbing for dollars, free professional services and the non-gentrified refurbishing of our houses, businesses, communities, churches and schools. We cannot afford to be in high and respected places and be novices politically. That just doesn't work.

On yet another matter and in my relating to another Black Gay activist in Philadelphia. I sent an e-Mail to Brother Tyrone Smith about how I felt a real level of ostracizing or marginalizing from our own community, but I personalized it and mentioned him and Michael Hinson, another Black Gay leader--very visible--in Philadelphia during the Street Administration. Michael was also very visible before that as head of the Colours Organization. [Brother Tyrone was head of an organization called Unity which provided support services to people with HIV and Aids in the Philadelphia area.] Unity was very, very effective for any number of years and Brother Tyrone MUST be commended for part of that effectiveness under His stewardship. I want to publicly apologize to Brother Tyrone and Michael for that remark, but like I’ve said, I’ve felt out of the loop for years in some circles of leadership right here in Philadelphia, even though I have dedicated myself to the political struggle here for over three decades.
{Most of my work has concerned the Health and Well-Being of Black People}.

Another sector I have felt ostracized and omitted from was Congressman Gray's dealings as a Black City Father.  With over 20 years of activism under my belt at the time, I felt and still feel I more than deserve to be included when money was given out for certain Black Progressive projects. I was NEVER invited to the table. Still. Like it says in the Bible, I forgave him and I gave some of my very hard earned few monthly dollars to one of Reverend Gray's charities at his passing a few months ago.

I'm not saying I am better than anybody else. What I'm saying is that until we as Black people STOP letting the corrupting influences of the dollar bill get in the way of what we want to achieve for our people, we remain mortals scattered about like so many roaches, unable to pick up the ropes or power and control our own destinies.
